Amazon Q

Amazon announced today that its Q AI-powered assistant is now generally available in versions for businesses and developers.

“Amazon Q is the most capable generative AI-powered assistant available today with industry-leading accuracy, advanced agents capabilities, and best-in-class security that helps developers become more productive and helps business users to accelerate decision making,” AWS vice president Dr. Swami Sivasubramanian said. “Since we announced the service at re:Invent, we have been amazed at the productivity gains developers and business users have seen. Early indications signal Amazon Q could help our customers employees become more than 80 percent more productive at their jobs. And with the new features were planning on introducing in the future, we think this will only continue to grow.”

Amazon announced Q as a chatbot solution for enterprise customers in November 2023, but the public release includes two versions, Amazon Q Developer and Amazon Q Business, plus a preview of Amazon Q Apps, a new tool that lets employees build their own AI-powered apps (really, GPTs or chatbots).

In addition to testing and debugging software code, Amazon Q Developer uses multistep planning and reasoning capabilities to generate software code from natural language prompts. It can also troubleshoot, upgrade apps, optimize AWS resource utilization, and perform security scans and implement security fixes. Amazon Q Business answers questions, generates summaries, creates new content, and securely completes tasks using internal enterprise data and information like company policies, product information, business results, code base, employees, and more. Amazon Q Business is also available now in QuickSight, the AWS Business Intelligence (BI) service, so analysts can use natural language to build BI dashboards and create visualizations and complex calculations.

Amazon Q Apps isn’t described very well, but it appears to be a basic custom GPT builder aimed at automating tasks.

“Amazon Q Apps lets employees build generative AI-powered apps from their company’s data, without any prior coding experience,” the announcement explains. “Employees simply describe the type of app they want, in natural language, and Q Apps will quickly generate an app that accomplishes their desired task, helping them streamline and automate their daily work with ease and efficiency. ”

To help you get started with Amazon Q, AWS has launched two free, self-paced digital courses: Amazon Q Introduction and Amazon Q Business Getting Started, the latter of which explains how to build a chatbot using Amazon Q. You can also learn more on the Amazon Q website.
