Sea of Thieves is Now Available on PlayStation 5

Sea of Thieves PS5

Sea of Thieves, the popular pirate game Microsoft originally released on Xbox consoles and PC back in 2018 is now available on PlayStation 5. This is the last of the four Xbox exclusive games that Microsoft announced were coming to other consoles earlier this year, and it’s probably the most popular with over 40 million players since launch.

In retrospect, Sea of Thieves is probably the most successful live service game Microsoft launched in recent years, with the game’s Season 12 launching today. You may also remember that Sea of Thieves was the first new Xbox game that Microsoft made available on day one on Xbox Game Pass back in March 2018.

With the game now being six years old, it probably makes sense to bring it to another platform like PlayStation 5 to make its live service aspect more sustainable. A recent technical analysis from Digital Foundry also showed that the PS5 version of the game actually has slightly better graphics than the Xbox Series X version.

It’s also worth noting that Sea of Thieves is the first Rare game to be released on a PlayStation console, but it’s not coming to the Nintendo Switch, even though Rare released many cult-classic on Nintendo consoles back in the day such as Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, or Perfect Dark. The game also skipping the PlayStation 4, which is strange as Sea of Thieves runs fine on the less powerful Xbox One.

Sea of Thieves is priced at $39.99 on the PlayStation Store, but there are also Deluxe ($49.99) and Premium ($59.99) editions with unique cosmetic items and other bonus content. Lastly, the game supports cross-play with Xbox and PC players after signing in with a Microsoft account.
