Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Series Chips Are Coming to “All PC Form Factors”

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series PC form factors

At Computex 2024 yesterday, Qualcomm’s keynote put the spotlight on the first wave of Copilot+ PCs powered by Snapdragon X Elite chips coming in June. While Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, and Samsung will launch over 20 new Qualcomm-powered Copilot+ laptops next month, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon also made it clear that Snapdragon X Series chips won’t be restricted to mobile PCs.

“Snapdragon X and Copilot+ are coming to all PC form factors,” the exec said on stage. Qualcomm is now in this neighborhood to stay, we’re not going anywhere, and we’re very happy to be working with our partners on all the different form factors for the industry. And this is incredibly exciiting because the PC is truly reborn, and that’s a great transition.”

As of today, the only desktop PC with a Snapdragon X Elite chip is the developer-focused Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows. While the Mac Mini-like device will come with an external power supply, it will be the only PC with Snapdragon X Elite chip with a peak TDP of 80W.

Under the hood, the $899 Snapdragon Dev Kit for Windows comes with 32GB of of LPDDR5x RAM, 512GB of NVMe storage, and a vast array of ports including three USB4 Type-C ports. This will allow users to connect up to three 4K monitors on the device.

Qualcomm’s CEO promised that there will be “a Copilot+ PC for everyone,” though the company and its PC partners have yet to announce when other form factors are coming. There’s certainly an audience for Qualcomm-powered desktop workstations, but Intel and AMD aren’t resting on their laurels either. Intel’s upcoming Lunar Lake chips will power over 80 different AI PC designs from 20 PC makers in Q3 2024, and AMD also announced new Copilot+ PC capable chips for laptops and desktop PCs this week.
