Gmail is about to drop support for some features designed for third-party email accounts. Starting this month, fetching emails from accounts via the POP3 standard will be discontinued, and Google will also remove ‘Gmailify’ features for third-party accounts.
In a support page about upcoming changes to Gmailify and POP3 support in Gmail (via The Register), Google explains that it will still be possible to do a one-time import of emails and contacts from third-party accounts on Gmail on the web. However, the option to continuously check emails from other accounts through POP is going away.
As an alternative, Google recommends setting up automatic forwarding to Gmail from third-party email providers. However, that feature may not be supported by all email services, and Yahoo Mail even makes it a part of its $5/month Yahoo Mail Plus subscription.
I wasn’t aware of this, but Gmail on the web also lets you add up to 5 non-Gmail accounts, like Yahoo or iCloud (but not Outlook), to your account. Doing so currently provides Gmail features for third-party accounts, such as spam protection, automatic email sorting based on type, and advanced search with operators. However, these ‘Gmailify’ features will also be going away in January 2026.
