Raspberry Pi Brings AI to the Raspberry Pi 5

Raspberry Pi AI Kit

The Raspberry Pi Foundation announced a $70 AI Kit for the Raspberry Pi 5 that enables users to experiment with AI and machine learning.

“If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with the world of neural networks, artificial intelligence and machine learning on your Raspberry Pi 5, we have the perfect product for you: the Raspberry Pi AI Kit,” Raspberry Pi’s Naush Patuck writes. “Developed in collaboration with Hailo, the AI Kit offers an accessible way to integrate local, high-performance, power-efficient inferencing into a wide variety of applications. It’s available today.”

The AI Kit is a two-piece set that includes an M.2 HAT+ and a Hailo-8L AI accelerator module. It offers 13 TOPS of AI accelerated performance—more than the most powerful Intel Core Ultra processor available today, by the way—and is designed for AI vision applications, with first- and third-party camera support and the ability to run multiple neural networks on a single camera (or single/multiple neural networks with up to two cameras).

The AI Kit supports object detection, semantic and instance segmentation, pose estimation, and facial landmarking, and other capabilities, all of which run directly on the Hailo-8L, freeing the Raspberry Pi 5 CPU for other tasks. Hailo offers a model zoo for users to find pre-trained neural network models optimized for the AI Kit. Raspberry Pi has updated its AI framework to support the camera subsystem, which is documented in a handy getting started guide and the documentation.

You can learn more about the Raspberry Pi AI Kit on the Raspberry Pi website.
