Microsoft Expands Mistral Partnership for European AI

Microsoft announced an expansion of its strategic partnership with France-based AI firm Mistral to expand European AI infrastructure.

“Europe should have access to the world’s most capable AI without compromising control over their data, operations or digital future,” Microsoft vice chair and president Brad Smith said. “By bringing Mistral’s frontier European models into our sovereign cloud portfolio and enabling them across public cloud, cloud-connected, and fully disconnected environments, we are honoring the European Digital Commitments we made and giving customers a trusted foundation for AI they can operate on their own terms.”

Under the terms of the partnership, Microsoft will bring Mistral’s frontier and efficiency AI models across Microsoft Foundry, Copilot Studio, Azure, and the entire Microsoft platform so customers can build and run AI-based solutions of all sizes. It will also combine Mistral’s frontier models with its security, compliance, and cloud-to-edge platform, giving customers more choice about how and where they deploy AI.

Microsoft says that this expansion of the Mistral partnership is a “multi-billion dollar agreement” that will help expand the European AI infrastructure, with Mistral adding to its GPU capacity by purchasing “thousands” of the latest NVIDIA Vera Rubin GPUs. This will increase availability for customers on the continent and provide a shared platform for training, inference and large-scale deployment. It also expands Microsoft’s capacity footprint in Europe and supports the European Digital Commitments that Microsoft announced in 2025.

Starting today, the Mistral Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 AI models are available in Microsoft Foundry, Medium 3.5 is available in Copilot Studio, and financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, and other regulated businesses can run Mistral-based AI apps in Azure or Azure Local.
